# Why We Exist

WPL emerges as a response to the pressing challenges facing both game studios and players within the web3 gaming landscape. With game studios struggling to acquire and retain users amid fierce competition, WPL recognizes the transformative potential of AI in driving user engagement, retention, and monetization.

When WPL was founded in 2022, we knew the issues facing game studios, especially indie and web3 studios were huge. Only 4% of games that make it to production actually make a profit. And that's the ones that actually get built. Close to half of all game budgets get spent on expensive marketing campaigns instead of actual gameplay because it's impossible to get affordable, trustworthy and impactful support.&#x20;

Success wasn't going to happen over night, so we started creating tooling, infrastructure and marketing support to help level the playing field.  We signed our first 15 studios in 2023 and are planning on adding an additional 15-30 in 2024.&#x20;

Simultaneously, WPL addresses the evolving needs of players, who seek more than just individual game experiences—they crave ownership, community, and meaningful rewards.

There are 3.2 billion players in the world and not one esports or professional sport league that is owned by its players or fans. Players deserve more. WPL is the world’s first player owned sports league.&#x20;
